Size Guide

Choosing the right kilim size is just as important as choosing the right pattern. A handwoven flatweave doesn’t just lie on the floor — it sets proportion, frames furniture, and anchors how a room feels. Below is a simple, room-by-room guide to help you decide the ideal size before you purchase.

Living Room

Flatweave kilims work especially well in living rooms because they sit slim under furniture and don’t add bulk. A good rule: the rug should relate to the seating group, not the full room.

  • Larger rooms / anchored look: choose a size that allows all front legs of sofas and chairs to rest on the rug (commonly 8×10 or 9×12 equivalents).
  • Compact rooms / lighter look: place the rug in front of the sofa, leaving a few inches of floor border (often 5×7 or 6×9 equivalents).
  • Avoid rugs that are too small — they visually “float” and make the room feel unbalanced.

Dining Room

Because kilims are flat and easy to slide chairs on and off, they are ideal under a dining table.

  • Choose a size that extends at least 20–24 inches beyond all sides of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled back.
  • Example ranges for common tables:
    4–6 seats → ~6×9
    6–8 seats → ~8×10
    8–10 seats → ~9×12

Bedroom

Think in terms of how much rug is seen when you step out of bed.

  • Full/Queen beds: ~ 6×9 gives visible rug on both sides.
  • King beds: ~ 8×10 or 9×12 anchors the entire frame with comfortable margins.
  • For smaller rooms, two runner kilims placed on each side is a workable alternative.

Hallway / Runners

Kilim runners prevent long corridors from looking empty and also protect high-traffic paths.

  • Leave a 1–3 inch border of flooring along both sides for a tailored look.
  • For stair landings or intersecting halls, it is better to break into two shorter runners than force one long continuous piece.

Entryway

Entry kilims make a strong first impression and catch daily grit.

  • Choose a size that allows the door to open freely and still shows at least 6–12 inches of rug visible when closed.
  • In open foyers, scale to the footprint of the space rather than the door.

Final Note

Handwoven kilims are reversible, low-profile, and easy to rotate — ideal for spaces where proportion and maintenance both matter. Always measure the room and tape the outline before purchasing to confirm the visual weight in context.
