Kilim rug cleaning and routine maintenance tips

Kilim Care & Routine Maintenance

Kilim Rug Care Advice

Regular cleaning

Vacuum weekly on low suction with no beater/rotating brush. Handheld or upholstery attachment is ideal.

Make several passes from different directions to lift grit from the flat weave.

For reversible kilims, flip occasionally and vacuum the other side.

Spills & stains

Act fast. Blot (don’t rub) with a clean, undyed cloth, pressing around the spill to contain it.

If needed, use cool water and a drop of wool-safe mild soap; test a hidden spot first.

Avoid over-wetting, steam cleaners, bleach, enzymes, or oxy products.

Stubborn stains: professional rug cleaner (not regular dry cleaning).

Protection

Use a felt or felt-rubber rug pad to prevent slipping, smooth wrinkles, and reduce wear/color transfer.

Sunlight: avoid direct, continuous exposure; close shades or rotate the rug.

Furniture: place protectors under heavy legs to prevent crushing.

Snags: never pull loose ends—clip carefully with scissors.

Rotation

Rotate or reposition every ~3 months (rug + pad) for even wear and to prevent adhesion to floors.

Storage

Roll front side out; wrap in breathable cloth (no plastic).

Store in a dry, well-ventilated space; add cedar or lavender sachets for moth deterrence.

Do not fold.
